Cyber crime is defined as a crime in which a computer is the object of the crime (hacking, phishing, spamming) or is used as a tool to commit an offense (child pornography, hate crimes). Cybercriminals may use computer technology to access personal information, business trade secrets or use the internet for exploitative or malicious purposes. Criminals can also use computers for communication and document or data storage. Criminals who perform these illegal activities are often referred to as hackers. Cybercrime may also be referred to as computer crime.
It's also considered as a transboundary offences, although the world has not agreed on its definition and its specifications.
This crime has spread greatly after the widespread of the Web and social media, also the increasing of the number of users
Palestine, as other societies, is invaded by this crime, and it is committed by both Palestinians and others who can access and use the information as a way to blackmail, threaten, defame and steal social media accounts or e-mail. These are the most known types in Palestine.
Palestinian Police spokesman Loay Irziqat says, that the Palestinian police attended to this crime from its beginning, so they established a unit in the criminal investigation department under the name of cyber crimes unit.
PA Police spokes man Loay Irziqat indicates that" statistics issued by CID indicates a significant increase relates to cyber crimes, the PCP registered 502 cases in 2015,1327 in 2016,2025 in 2017, 2568 in 2018 i.e.26.6%over the past year. Hebron Governorate registered the highest percent with 477 cases, then Jenin with 432 cases, where Jericho was the lowest with 61 cases.
PA Police spokes man Loay Irziqat indicates that" electronic piracy was the highest among the registered cases with 667 cases, while threat cases reached 557, while defamation reached 288 cases.
He also clarified that males had the highest ration among the target groups of this crime. The unit received 1447 complaints from males and 1034 from females. The category of 18- 25 years was more exposed to cyber crimes.
The cyber crime unit has achieved great success in spite of its recentness work and its establishment in the detection of crimes received by cyber crimes unit between 45% and 54% during these years.
Irzieqat appealed to all citizens to take safety measures while using the Internet and not to surrender to the blackmailer demands and go to police immediately when aperson feels that he has become a victim.
Irzieqat stressed that the police rely on secrecy in dealing with these issues under the strict instructions of Major General Hazem Atallah, the chief of PCP.
